This subgenre of Science Fiction deals with advanced technology in a dystopic near future setting. During the late twentieth century writers became more character focused. The plot usually circles around characters are intellectually gifted at using certain device in an attempt to improve themselves or break down social order. The characters are usually hackers who are in conflict with the government, corporations, or themselves.
One of the most influential works of Cyberpunk is William Gibson' "Neuromancer" novel. The story is about a hacker named Henry Case who is looking for a cure in order to repair his body after one of his employers poisoned him when finding out that he was trying to steal from them. This story centers around the real world as well as the virtual world. There are also technological modification to humans such as retractable claws and optical enhancements that improves both reflexes and vision.
